Currently Reading

Last week I finally finished off the two books I have been reading for the past while. I finished Be My Guest which is Conrad Hilton's autobiography and the book I mentioned in a previous post Talent Is Overrated.

The other day I started reading Maverick by Ricardo Semler which is quite good so far.

  1. It is about a company in Brazil that was run by Ricardo Semler. His Dad started it and he took it over. He made lots of changes in the 80s and 90s which were (are still) pretty radical.

For instance: he let managers choose their salary. He removed almost all job titles. He let the workers choose how profit sharing works and how much they all got. He removed any kind of dress code. Basically he trusted employees to make decisions.

He also brought more of a democratic business system in rather than a typical autocratic system.

He really empowered employees in a way that I have never heard of anyone actually doing before. Most companies give lip service to it but he actually does it. And the effect was that employees were free to become innovative and produce higher quality results.

It is so refreshing to read about such a different way to run a business.

  2. In fact, it is such an interesting structure, that I submitted my resume on their website. You never know, maybe we'll move to Brazil and be all cool and Brazilian. *Whee*

  3. That's interesting. Did you know that is pretty much how WestJet was started. But it became clear when they started to grow rapidly that the business model you are speaking of wasn't sustainable.

Eventaully because of size, WestJet moved to a more formal style of business. You can still see reminants of the old days though.
